Catedrático de literatura española na Universidade de Vigo onde dirixe / Hesperia. Anuario de Filoloxía Hispánica/; tamén é director de /Anais Cervantinos/ (CSIC, selo de calidade FECYT). Foi profesor tamén nas universidades de Carleton (Ottawa, Canadá), Valladolid e Münster (Alemaña). Premio Fernández Abril da Real Academia Española (1995), é Presidente de Honra da Asociación de Cervantistas, que dirixiu entre 2004 e 2012.
